System Maintenance - Perry Hoberman USA ![]() On show for the first time in Germany: System Maintenance, the interactive installation by US artist Perry Hoberman. A furnished room and two identical replicas, all merged into one projection, compete with each other for the visitors attention. By shifting the furniture and changing the camera angle, visitors can either disrupt or harmonise the arrangement. Hobermans work is concerned less with man-machine interaction than with the interplay among the users of his installation. (Commissioned by Hull Time Based Arts) |

SCANNER ++ - Joachim Blank und Karl Heinz Jeron (D)![]() Joachim Blank and Karl-Heinz Jeron (Berlin) created SCANNER ++, a stage made of dozens of pieces of glass one can walk on. Underneath there are just as many scanners recording the world in a steady rhythm. By walking on the scanner stage the spectators create an Internet page that is projected onto a wall in the exhibition. Scanner ++ makes the digitalisation of our world in the age of a knowledge and information driven society visible and comprehensible. The scanning process (lat. = to emphasise) may be one of the most natural but is also one of the most radical methods in processing analogue into digital data. |

VinylVideoTM - an invention by Gebhard Sengmüller, in cooperation with Günter Erhart, Martin Diamant und Best Before ![]() The installation VinylVideo by BestBefore / Gerhard Sengmüller (A) revives a medium some thought to be extinct: the long-playing record. The wondrous and fascinating invention VinylVideo makes it possible to store video films on conventional LPs. The picture disks produced in this way can be played on a normal record player opening up new possibilities of visual scratching. A new picture disc by Olia Lialina(RUS) is released for EMAF'99 Premiere of the website www.vinylvideo.com, created by Rachel Stevens and Georg Sengmueller |

Flies - Michael van der Leest NL There are several lenses and tiny monitors on tripods in front of a monitor that record the image on the monitor. Michael van der Leest consciously used a simple and aesthetically pleasing way to point out the connection between human perception and memory: Only the right amount of identical points makes a series of images dissolve into one movement. |

Force II - Peter Bogers NL (Location: Vertikales Museum / Felix-Nussbaum-Haus) In 1998 a new museum dedicated to the work of the painter Felix Nussbaum opened in Osnabrück. The Dutch video artist Peter Bogers was invited to develop an installation for a specific location inside the museum complex. The screen which is hanging close to the ceiling high above one's head shows a clenched fist and the palm of a hand slowly rotating together. One after the other either the hand or the fist trembles. Just when the quivering changes from the hand to the fist or vice versa a strong flashlight is triggered off and lights up the screen. The slight ticking sound of the flashlight is heavily amplified. The unknown symbol was created via simple image manipulation juxtaposing the classic symbol of power and the symbol of fragility and vulnerability. |

millenniumania - Nina Fischer / Maroan el Sani D (Location: Galerie Drei Kronenhaus) millenniummania will be a computer-controlled installation. Via Internet pedestrian videos from 24 different places in 24 timezones will permanently be sent into the installation. The videos will be projected on a 360 degree screen. The calculated average speed of the pedestrians at one place defines the speed of the respective film in the 260 degree screen installation. Each film moves with its own speed. The pedestrian real-time images on the different places competing within the circle. Its an endless race. |
