“Und alles, alles, alles war wieder gut” is the last sentence sung by a chorus of middle aged men that opens You are the center of the world. Three young adults find themselves on their own in a deserted provincial town. As they wander around aimlessly, it becomes obvious something is terribly wrong. The high school appears to have been bustling with activity just moments ago, cars are left standing in the middle of the road: It is as if people have vanished from the earth from one moment to the next. The three young men are calm about it. They don’t even speak. It is almost as if they are somehow complicit in this inexplicable state of affairs
The unspeakable freedom device follows the desperate Mary, mother of a sick green baby, and her friend Glenda. They make their way through a bizarre landscape set in the near future, or perhaps a parallel universe, and are headed for the town of Blu Pool, where Mary is looking to obtain a new kind of device that feeds its owners feelings of contentment. En route they meet various colour coded characters, amongst whom are fanatical followers of the ‘Blu Lady’: a divine Maggie Thatcher who is the spiritual force behind the Unspeakable Freedom Device and the only ruling entity left in this warped folk-tale.
