The GAMA portal provides access to a wealth of information about the works of well-known and emerging media artists from Europe and abroad.The material on media art from initially eight European media art archives can be searched and browsed on this common platform.The art projects presented include (previews of) experimental film and video art, performances, installations and net.art; they are documented and additionally contextualized with texts, lectures and events. The platform provides a service which translates local descriptions of content into a central database, the structure and integrity of the individual archives is maintained but the visibility of the media art is considerably magnified. Visual properties (such as colour, texture, motion) and audio features (such as loudness) are automatically detected in videos and still images. Automatic speech recognition enables the retrieval of spoken text in audio tracks of videos and character recognition allows textual inserts in videos to be extracted for related queries.
