// MEET THE ARTISTS: International media artists in Osnabrück
For five whole days, Osnabrück becomes a lively, prominent meeting place for media artists, curators, lenders and gallery owners. This is the meeting place for specialists from the fields of art, culture and the media, as well as an interested international audience. Each year, the festival provides a current overview of the international media art scene. We warmly invite you to be a part of it from 23 to 27 April 2008 in Osnabrück. Register now at www.emaf.de !
At the media art festival you will see productions by internationally renowned media artists alongside innovative works by young talented artists. Many of these artists will be present at the festival to introduce their works in person. Around 300 current installations, films and videos were selected for this year's festival from a total of around 2200 works submitted from 50 countries.
// EXHIBITION "Young Identities- Global Youth"
You will have the opportunity to meet almost of the artists represented in the exhibition in Osnabrück. Known from the biennales of Venice and Istanbul: the AES+F group of artists, from which we welcome George Arzamasov. Their video panorama "Last Riot" is remembered by all who have seen it. An equally lasting impression is left behind by the performance "The Girlfriend Experience", which enables viewers to experience second life from close up. Actors stand at the ready in a glass cage as avatars receive instructions from visitors, their 'controllers'. Jeremy Shaw's work, on the other hand, is of a completely different nature. The Canadian, who will also be coming to Osnabrück, decelerates the pogo body-conscious dance of the 'straight edge' scene into a hypnotic/meditative choreography. The American Reynold Reynolds and the internationally renowned media artist Bjørn Melhus have each designed a new work especially for the festival, and will both be present in Osnabrück. And these are just a number of examples of what and who to expect at the exhibition...
// CINEMA
Moderated film programmes give you the opportunity to enter into dialogue with many different filmmakers, and to get a few questions off your chest. What awaits you, and who will be present? Barbara Klutinis will present her film "Severing the soul", which deals with the psychosurgical movement in the USA from 1930 to 1960. Nicholas and Sheila Pye introduce their film "Loudly, Death Unities": the secluded life of a young couple is interrupted by the cry of the banshee. Rinat Kotlers will bring along her film "Babysitting" - in which all kinds of unhappy babysitting events can be seen. Julian Neville will be in Osnabrück to present his film "Lowlight", which explores the altered night life of New York. And Telemach Wiesinger will be coming to give us a view of technical dinosaurs - masterpieces of bridge architecture - in "Passage...S". In his film "Revu Rockers" from Mexico, Bernado Arellano portrays three mariachi who cross the border town of Tijuana in musical ecstasy, carrying a statue of Benito Juárez. These are just a taster of the extensive film programmes and filmmakers awaiting you in Osnabrück.
// CONGRESS
Take part in the discussion on current media and art subjects. The presentation "The communication society and its adversaries" by padeluun, who deals with the subject of data retention and activities such as presentation of the "Big Brother Awards", also gives you the opportunity to become involved in the debate, as with the lecture by Ralf Benrath on "Digital identities". Questions concerning "Identity management" will almost certainly be answered by the well-known media scientist Professor Dr. Norbert Bolz, subsequent to his lecture. You also have the chance to learn a great deal about the situation of media artists in Pakistan and Lebanon during the festival congress.
// INTERNATIONAL STUDENT FORUM: Offers for students
Students can obtain the festival pass for just €12 instead of €35 if they register by 11 April 2008. With the festival pass, you have free access to all events, i.e. exhibitions, film programmes, performances, lectures and parties - a good opportunity to get to know new people. And you also have the chance to meet many of the artists in person because this year, the International Student Forum again presents selected young artists from all over the world. Incidentally, accommodation is provided for students for a fixed rate of €5! Please send your enquiries directly to stufo@emaf.de .
// AWARD CEREMONY
It is bound to be exciting again when the speaker calls "and the winner is..." at the award ceremony on Saturday, 26 April. An international jury shall confer the "EMAF Award" for a trend-setting work in Media Art and the "Dialogpreis" of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the promotion of intercultural exchange. Furthermore, the jury of the German Federal Association of Film Journalists will award the prize for the best German experimental film this evening. The award-winners of "digital sparks 08" will also be presente at the EMAF for the first time this year. Students from 47 higher education institutions, academies and universities from Switzerland, Austria and Germany participated in the competition.
We look forward to welcoming you to the festival!
