Lecture: "Archive-Interfaces"
Gabriele Blome, Ludwig Bolzmann Institute Linz.
Online resources on Media Art offer users a wide variety of possibilities to research the data stock. Access offered via websites is not simply based on database structures but are the result of a complex interaction of institutional objectives, potential user requirements and available resources and tools. Most archive interfaces are instruments that support specific research interests. They enable queries to be made regarding data sets, they evaluate data structures and represent them in various display formats and navigation structures. Furthermore, the explorative type of interfaces has also emerged, the aim of which is to support browsing in the archive and the discovery of contents previously unknown to users. Such archive interfaces are primarily designed for research that cannot be described in specific queries. They can also convey additional insights and new knowledge not explicitly written in the database. What the various archive interfaces accomplish and their relationship to the data stock or the respective institutional context is discussed on the basis of a range of examples.
The lecture is based on research into Media Art archives and visualisation concepts carried out at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute Media.Art.Research. in Linz (Austria).
