Despite well-attended festivals, international research, numerous articles, conferences and database-aided documentation, Media Art has not yet been received by our society: it is not systematically collected by museums and archives, nor is due consideration given to it in history of art in higher education; for art-lovers and researchers outside the north-western hemisphere, it remains difficult to access. In a manner unique in the world of art history, Media Art is subject to the ephemeral nature of storage media and the permanent development of technologies, meaning that works created less than ten years ago can generally no longer be shown today. If we do not want to completely lose this heritage, we have to act now to take the necessary steps to preserve it.
