A field report about the online-catalogue of the IMAI (Inter Media Art Institute) by Dr. Renate Buschmann.
The online catalogue, available to everyone on the internet, is a milestone in the relaying of video art. At present, around 1,200 audiovisual works belonging to the collection and sales programme of the imai can be played online in full length. This database can be used to search on the basis of artists, titles and keywords. Additional user-friendly options, such as the selection of film sequences and freeze frames, enable videos to be studied more effectively. This online catalogue is an easily available source of information, especially for curators, collectors and academics.

The imai foundation was founded in 2006 on the initiative of the City of Düsseldorf and the Cologne-based Media Art agency 235 Media. It has a collection of around 3,200 video works from the pioneer era of this genre, the late 1960s, up to the present. The main objectives of the imai are to promote the relaying and distribution of this significant compilation of video art, as well as to deal professionally with issues such as preserving and restoring Media Art.
