Glenn R. Phillips, Getty Research Institute Los Angeles

Between 1974 and 1995, the Long Beach Museum of Art operated one of the most successful and innovative video art departments in the United States. In addition to an active program of exhibitions and screenings, the museum developed a number of important projects for cable television broadcast, and maintained a post-production facility and visiting artist residency that provided artists with access to editing services and equipment. In 2006, the Long Beach Museum of Art’s video archive, consisting of nearly five thousand tapes, was acquired by the Getty Research Institute (GRI). One of the largest art libraries in the world, the GRI also holds the archives of several artists and groups who were important in the history of video and performance art, including the archives of Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T), Allan Kaprow, Yvonne Rainer, Carolee Schneemann, David Tudor, and extensive Fluxus collections. With the addition of the Long Beach archive, the GRI’s media collections now total more than 6,000 titles, the majority of which are on obsolete formats. The GRI has built a small on-site media preservation lab, which it uses to clean and digitize audio and video works so that they can be available for library patrons to view upon request.
