Artist Talk: "Master Compass"
Master Compass - Interview with a souvenir from the war
Harry Walter, Stuttgart
The last German plane left the kessel of Stalingrad on 23 January 1943 with a bullet-ridden tail fin and several wounded on board. The pilot at that time dismounted the compass built into the tail of the plane after a crash landing and initially kept it for himself as a souvenir from Stalingrad. Towards the end of the war, for reasons that can no longer be clarified, he gave this compass to his brother, who was also serving in the Luftwaffe. Shortly afterwards, his brother was captured by the Americans as a prisoner of war near Brescia, but was able to escape and, with the help of the master compass hidden in his rucksack, made his way back safely over the Alps to his home village on the western edge of the Black Forest, usually on marches by night. Today, the compass and other personal legacies are in the possession of his son. The lecture tells the strange story of this orientation device, which can be traced back via several stops to what is now known as Volgograd.
Harry Walter’s work EICHMANN FLEISCHMANN NECKERMANN, an installation with media chest and Leporello will be presented at the exhibition "Image Battles".
