Netzspannung.org / Media Flow

"Staging an archive in the browser"
Monika Fleischmann,Wolfgang Strauss

The matter hidden behind digital archives is usually portrayed in lists and index card-like interfaces. Although this form is useful for archivists or academics, they do not have a very inspiring effect on users.
The Media Flow is a browser that makes the contents of the archive of the internet platform netzspannung.org legible. Two parallel media flows – one containing images and the other words – flow past the observer. The authors, title and keywords are contained in the flow of words. The image icons of the archived documents are shown in the flow of images. The flow of images and texts activates a perception and reading process that focuses on the selection of terms between the periphery and the core. The synopsis of the overview, context and detail of information enables an associative navigation in the archive that links the classic approach via keywords to visually oriented approaches.
